I have titebond iii as well but have not used that as much.
Glue vinyl to mdf.
Apply a thin layer of polyvinyl acetate or polyurethane based glue to the areas that you want to glue.

The secret to spray adhesive is to spray both the wood and vinyl then wait about 10 20 seconds to let the adhesive get tacky.
Be careful not to pull too far or at an acute angle since old thermofoil can snap off or crack.

I will second the vote for gorilla glue or equivalent poly glue.
If the wood is very porous use two coats to ensure the glue fills in all holes.
